BREONICS is a private research & discovery company located at Albany, New York. Organized in 1996, the company has developed a new and innovative technology Exsanguinous Metabolic Support (EMS) which enables the continued oxidative metabolism and function of kidneys while isolated from the rest of the human body. EMS is the first technology that can be used to intervene after cardiac arrest to repair ischemically damaged kidneys for transplantation. This unique ability of EMS changes today’s limitation of recovering deceased donor kidneys from within minutes of death to a window of several hours postmortem. The EMS technology significantly broadens the criteria for kidney donation to include those patients who are declared dead from cardiac arrest at an accident scene in the ER, patients that are not considered for kidney donation.
